“I first met Phil while on holiday with friends in Bali. We were already very interested in somatic work and strongly believed that our emotions are deeply connected to the physical body so we booked a group session which was really interesting. During the movement session we used some balls and foam rollers on different areas of our body. I was shocked by how intense the physical discomfort and emotional release could be — and how it could change simply by not judging it or doing any kind of analysis, just observing where it shows up and allowing it to flow. The next time you would put the ball or roller in the same place and have no or very little reaction or discomfort.
I’d been struggling for some time with knee pain — walking more than a few hundred meters was difficult and using stairs was a painful , one step at a time process. I’d been told I had arthritis and have a family history of knee replacements. I had started to move as little as possible due to the pain and fear so I decided I needed some more help and started private sessions with Phil.
In one of our first sessions, Phil said we were going to tackle stairs using a normal walking posture and allow all emotions to come up. I hadn’t been able to walk normally up and down steps in over a year and didn’t even attempt to any more. During that session, I had an intense emotional release. A feeling I’d describe as ‘fear’ came up and after it moved through me, I found I could walk up and down the stairs almost normally again. It was a life changing moment.
Phil’s somatic movement work is not for the faint of heart. It challenges you emotionally and physically as you become aware of where your body holds tension and emotion. Over three weeks of working with him regularly, I began to connect with my body in a way I felt I never had. My flexibility returned and I find myself needing the stretch and movement regularly. My knee pain started to ease — even though I was still carrying extra weight that hadn’t reduced. My breathing became deeper and more relaxed, especially as emotions came to the surface. It felt like my whole nervous system was calming down.
I am still carrying extra weight and that does contribute to the overall pressure on my body but the biggest takeaway was discovering that simple stretches and movements can help you get in touch with the intensely uncomfortable emotions and sensations stored in your body and when you release those then physical pain can reduce dramatically!

“I began experiencing lower abdominal and shoulder pain about seven years ago while exercising. Since then, I’ve been unable to continue my passion for functional training or other high-intensity workouts, as the pain would constantly return whenever I trained.

“I met Phil through a recommendation from a friend. Oddly it was an Instagram post that a friend was back in town and if you were suffering from pain or had body issues he was the guy, hit him up.
I never respond to things like this. Never. But for some reason this spoke to me. I had been suffering with a nerve issue in my left arm that left my hand numb. I had been to Chiros, regular Dr’s and a neurologist. In addition to this issue I have had neck issues for 30 years at various levels of pain and had just given it to this being part of life. I have had years of rehab, pills and chiropractic adjustments, all of which had some benefits, but nothing "fixed" the problem.
I met with Phil and was immediately intrigued by his explanation of what he does and how he thought he could help. The combination of breathing techniques and precise postures and movements sounded interesting, but I wasn't sold that this would do much for me. “I’m a former competitive athlete and had disc surgery at 16. It didn’t help—turns out the real issue was elsewhere. Since then I’d carried lower-back pain for over 25 years, plus stubborn neck pain for more than 10 years. I’d tried everything: surgery, different physios, osteopathy, pain-medication therapies, even injections for acute phases. Some things helped short term, nothing lasted. My old athlete mode was ‘push through it,’ which meant I ignored my body more than I supported it.

In the past I’ve done lots of static stretching that would make me a little bit more flexible but after a short while progress stagnated which hurt my motivation and ultimately led to me quitting that practice. Now, my stretches go much deeper than when I first started working with Phil and my deep core is much stronger. Most exercises are simple so I can do them on my own after a couple times.
